Sarasota Newcomers Community Outreach
Sarasota Newcomers Club (SNC) is an active civic and social club with an emphasis on community volunteerism. There are currently three local organizations the Sarasota Newcomers Club sponsors and supports through volunteer hours and donations.
These organizations are as follows:
Mothers Helping Mothers
Joining Our Youth, or JOY
All Faiths Food Bank
Each year SNC donates hundreds of hours of service to these organizations and gathers countless bags of donated goods for the group's use.
In addition, at the end of each year, the monies gathered from monthly luncheon raffles are donated to these sponsored charities.
This year the Sarasota Newcomers Club donated $4000 to each of its charities.
See below for more information on each of SNC's sponsored charities.

Mothers Helping Mothers – MHM
Mothers Helping Mothers is a not-for-profit organization founded by Madeline Brogan in
1989 to help meet the needs of many within our community. MHM accepts donated
goods from around the area and recycles them to those in our community who have a need. MHM is located at 5933 N. Washington Blvd., which is also U.S. 301, Sarasota, Fl.
Anyone can shop at MHM with a valid form of identification. MHM supplies items such as free clothing, diapers, household items, and other goods to moms and babies, even cribs, which are given out on a first come, one-time basis. As an organization founded to help support those in need within our community, MHM must limit the goods given to each individual in an effort to reach the entire community’s needs. But MHM also does referrals for moms and babies in need. Referrals are made for furniture, housing, food, counseling and many other things.
SNC became involved with MHM about 3 ½ years ago when former member, Betty Irvine, arranged for a tour of MHM. After her tour, Betty saw a need and arranged for SNC members to begin volunteering once a month at the facility.
When SNC began volunteering, MHM was using a record keeping system consisting of files in cardboard boxes. Two SNC volunteers along with their husbands secured computers for the organization, while one of the husbands wrote a records program and the other taught SNC volunteers to use the new system.
Members helped with data input which eased the record keeping issues, and MHM was up and running with new computers in a short space of time. Those men still help out at MHM.
When MHM moved to their new location last August, SNC volunteers were instrumental in helping to set up the new store.
Volunteer duties are many. Sorting through donations from the community is a huge responsibility. Items must be sorted and organized for ease of accommodating clients in need. Cleaning the facility and keeping things neat helps to serve the clientele with a smile.
Volunteer days for SNC are the first and fourth Thursdays of each month. There are presently 12-15 past and present members who come on either day. It's a great way to get to work with fellow members and get to know them better. Thursday's volunteers help get donated items out to the floor of MHM, while some volunteers on Tuesdays and Fridays helping check clients into the program. SNC volunteers have a great time and welcome any member interested in giving their time or talents to MHM.
Just a reminder
At each luncheon, Community Outreach has a table set up where donations of toiletries are always welcome.

Joining Our Youth - JOY
JOY is an independent, community-based, non-profit organization that was started about six years ago, and as their mission statement states, it is an organization that is
made up of trained volunteers focused on improving the quality of life for
youths aging out of foster care. Our belief is that by providing unconditional
moral support and compassionate listening through mentoring and targeted
services, we can positively impact the confidence and self-esteem of
these young people. http://joysarasota.org/site/membership.htm
JOY distributes bikes, helmets, padlocks, and bus passes to enable the young men and women to get to and from school, work, and extra-curricular activities. Trendy Threads Boutique allows JOY’s participants a place to get the clothing items they need at no cost. This allows them to dress for success and put their best foot forward.
JOY’s mentoring program provides its young men and women with people who are “outside the system” who can listen to them. The mentors are trained and certified before being paired with one of the participants. JOY also distributes Housekeeping Starter Kits: these include items for the bath, bedroom, kitchen, and cleaning supplies as well as personal hygiene articles.
JOY has opportunities for SNC members to volunteer, mentor, as well as financially support their programs.

All Faiths Food Bank
The problem of hunger in our community is far greater than most people realize.
We gather and, in co-operation with our more than 160 partner agencies, distribute
food to more than 7,100 people weekly in Sarasota and DeSoto counties every day.
The majority of those we help to feed are hard-working families who simply cannot
make ends meet. They are parents in minimum-wage jobs, the elderly on fixed
incomes, and children who not only face the prospect of going to school on an empty
stomach, but of going to bed on one too. (http://www.allfaithsfoodbank.org/index.php)
With the help of 20 employees and 450 volunteers, All Faiths Food Bank (AFFB) has 16 programs that feed and nourish hungry people by distributing 4.2 million pounds of food to over 160 charitable agencies in Sarasota and DeSoto Counties every year.
